Kerstin Petau-Siegmund
BSc MA

My name is Kerstin Petau-Siegmund and I am a freelance translator, translating from English into German and vice versa. I have always had a passion for languages, countries and cultures. As a child, I devoured books and travelled the world with stories of faraway countries and adventures. Later, I travelled to many beautiful countries and regions where I was able to meet wonderful people from all over the world. Born in Austria, I worked in customer service for an airline before moving to Australia, where Sydney became my new home for nearly ten years. In Australia, I worked in various fields and completed a Bachelor of Science with a major in Human Geography. During this time, I developed a special interest in intercultural environmental management and the cultures of Indigenous peoples. I was also able to further develop my research skills in a variety of topics during my university studies. I have travelled extensively, mainly in South East Asia, Central and South America, Europe and Australia. As part of my university degree, I spent one academic semester in Thailand and completed an internship in Malaysia. I also gained international experience working in the higher education sector in both Austria and Australia. In these roles, I assisted with the administration and financial management of mobility and exchange programs for university students.
Apart from my love for languages, travel and books, spending time in nature has always been very important to me and I am personally and professionally interested in topics related to sustainable development. Since returning to Austria I have completed, amongst others, a University Certificate in Translation English/German with a 'Society, literature and culture' module and a Master's degree in Global Studies. During my university training in translation, it became clear to me that I wanted to become a freelance translator. I am committed to gain a variety of experiences and further develop my knowledge and skills in my specialised subject areas. Therefore, I have completed further training in the areas of subtitling, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), global leadership and old knowledge from nature. I also hold a qualification in veterinary nursing and I have gained experience in caring for (wild) animals in Australia. Further, I could expand my skills through volunteer work in a number of different areas. For example, I have volunteered at a meditation centre, for environmental projects, as a translator for a Protestant Church and in transcribing interviews for an Australian documentary.
As a dual citizen I enjoy living in a multicultural environment and I move between English and German in my daily life as well. Therefore, translation is not only a profession for me but also personally interesting. I produce my translations in a professional manner and focus particularly on diligence, confidentiality and high-quality scientific research of specialised vocabulary. Due to my previous careers and diverse interests, I offer multilayered translation services, focusing mainly on the abovementioned subject areas, specialised fields and types of texts. Thank you for your interest in my work. Should you have a translation assignment for me, I look forward to hearing from you. I look forward to your message!
